Legislation sponsored by Senator Jean Stanfield that designates the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) state building in Trenton as the “Richard J. Sullivan Building” was signed into law today by Governor Phil Murphy.

Richard Sullivan was the first Commissioner of the DEP for the State of New Jersey, served as the Chairman of the Pinelands Commission, and was critical in establishing Liberty State Park.

“As one of New Jersey’s most respected conservationists, Richard Sullivan not only dedicated his life to protecting the environment, but he established New Jersey as a national leader in pollution control, coastal protection and land preservation,” said Stanfield (R-8). “S2728 will recognize Richard’s legacy and designate the NJDEP’s Trenton headquarters in his name.”

“Naming a building after a public servant is not something that is an everyday occurrence, but Richard was not an everyday public servant,” said Umba. “Richard’s legacy set the tone and mission for a new agency which continues to this day; companion bill A4352 recognizes Richard’s contribution to conservation efforts in New Jersey.”
