Tiver Bill Allowing Disabled Vets/Purple Heart Recipients to Park in Disabled Spot Passes Committee

Today, the Senate Transportation Committee passed Senator Latham Tiver’s (R-08) bill to allow a holder of a disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plate or placard to park in parking spots for persons with disability.

“Making this change to allow disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients to park in spots reserved for people with a disability is one small way we can show our appreciation to those who have had their life severely altered defending our freedoms,” said Sen. Tiver. “These disabled veterans already meet the qualifications to park in handicapped spots and would be able skip the extra red tape of going to their local MVC, under this bill.”

S2815 provides that a person who has been issued a disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plate or placard is to be considered a person with a disability by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 

The bill further provides that any person who is a disabled veteran or recipient of the Purple Heart may park in parking spaces and zones that are restricted for persons with a disability provided that the person displays the person’s unexpired disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plate or placard while parked in that parking space or zone.
